First Time in Cancun: Practical Takeaways

Cancun can feel overwhelming on a first visit. With countless resorts, very different travel styles, and mixed reviews online, it’s hard to know what will actually work for your vacation. This post captures what we learned before and during our first trip to Cancun: how we chose our resort, what surprised us, food expectations especially for vegetarians, logistics you shouldn’t miss, safety considerations, and what we’d happily repeat or change next time.
Our Mexico Travel Background
Before this trip, our only experience in Mexico had been Los Cabos, which we visited a few years ago in December, and that trip definitely shaped our expectations.
In Cabo, we stayed at Riu Palace, traveled with close family friends, and the kids had an absolute blast. The Christmas vibe added something special to the experience. What stood out most were some of the best sunsets we’ve ever seen, a beautiful but not swimmable beach, and a large buffet that worked fairly well for vegetarian meals over several days, even though restaurant options were limited. The kids club was small and the kids didn’t want to spend much time there. We also did a memorable day trip to the Arch, which made for a great off‑resort experience.

At the time, we briefly considered Hyatt Ziva Cabo, but didn’t choose it because the booking wasn’t refundable. We prefer flexibility when traveling, especially when plans can change. Check out my blog for more on this at flexibletravel.travelme.us.
That said, it’s still on our list for the future as it offers a different experience compared to where we stayed in Cabo, and we’ve heard the beach there is better too.
We had also been considering Puerto Vallarta earlier this year, but due to the recent situation, we postponed that plan. Cancun itself was something we had planned and canceled in the past for different reason. We finally made the trip happen, and we’re glad we did!. Our kids had a blast — not a single boring day at the resort — and they got to spend so much quality time!!!
Also, by sticking to basic precautions, we felt comfortable throughout the trip.
How We Chose the Resort
Before booking Cancun, I spent time researching resorts based on how well they worked for adults versus kids and teens, whether they suited first‑time visitors or repeat travelers, and the overall all‑inclusive experience including beach quality, pools, food, and spa.
We narrowed it down to Hyatt Ziva Cancun, Hotel Xcaret, Playa Mujeres resorts, and Fiesta Americana.
Ultimately, we chose Fiesta Americana Coral Beach at the last minute, and it turned out to be a great option for families seeking a beach‑focused vacation. We had to cancel Hyatt Ziva a few days before the trip to keep our plans flexible, and Fiesta Americana fit that approach much better.
It’s worth noting there aren’t many nighttime activities here beyond things like karaoke, so it’s more about relaxing than entertainment‑heavy evenings. Our airport transportation was included as part of the resort deal, and we booked during a promotion, so keeping an eye on deals really helped.
Why Fiesta Americana Coral Beach
Fiesta Americana has two properties in Cancun, and this distinction matters. We stayed at Fiesta Americana Coral Beach, which in our opinion has one of the nicest beaches in Cancun, located right next to Hyatt Ziva. The other property, Fiesta Americana Condesa, is also in the hotel zone but offers a different overall vibe.
The beach at Coral Beach was wide, clean, calm, and very swimmable, making it ideal for long, relaxed beach days. Seeing it in person exceeded expectations and honestly rivaled or beat many other highly reviewed resorts. We didn’t see any seaweed during our stay, though it’s important to know that sargassum comes and goes, especially from March onward, and can get worse in warmer months.
Important Logistics to Know
One thing not to miss is the Cancun Visitor Tax, which is separate from hotel taxes and required starting in 2026. It’s best to pay it in advance on the official website and save the QR code, as we were asked to show proof while departing Cancun.
The Cancun airport also requires patience. Immigration took around an hour, and baggage claim took another hour. We intentionally traveled with fewer checked bags, which helped slightly.
We booked round‑trip airport transportation through the hotel using Lomas Travel, and this made arrival and departure completely stress‑free. Pre‑booking transport is highly recommended.
Infinity Club Upgrade Experience
Originally, we had Hyatt Ziva booked far in advance at a good price, but since our plans weren’t firm, we canceled about a month before travel. Closer to the trip, we found a solid last‑minute deal at Fiesta Americana and upgraded to the Infinity Club at check‑in, a tip I picked up from the hotel’s Facebook group.
The upgrade made the stay noticeably more pleasant. We were lucky to get a room with a large, wide terrace, which felt airy, open, and scenic. The view honestly reminded me of terrace homes in India, with expansive sky views throughout the day. It also comes with several additional perks to choose from, which can really help offset the overall cost if you end up using them. These include options like a free jet ski experience for two people, priority dining reservations, ferry tickets to Isla Mujeres, and access to an additional buffet at the Infinity Club lounge. If I remember correctly, you can choose three out of the five perks offered. When used thoughtfully, the upgrade can definitely feel worth it rather than just an added expense.
Another highlight was the room size. The rooms were spacious, well laid out, and didn’t feel cramped at all, which really helped with comfort during the stay. The bathroom was equally large, and the highlight there was the jacuzzi tub, which had a direct view of the beach.
All rooms at the resort have ocean views, and oceanfront rooms usually start above the fourth or fifth floor to avoid palm tree obstruction. No rooms directly face sunrise or sunset, but the views are still beautiful. Infinity Club also has its own breakfast buffet, not grand but a nice extra option. We also received two complimentary tickets for riding the beach water scooters, and the staff made the experience feel safe and fun.
Hotel Condition, Cleanliness, and Service
Although the property is older, it’s extremely well maintained. Everything was spotlessly clean, housekeeping came twice daily, and room‑service dining was very good. This matched exactly what we had read in the Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Facebook group.
Joining hotel‑specific Facebook groups is very helpful for practical, real‑time tips. Also, if you plan to tip in USD, bringing $1 bills is useful, as staff really appreciate it and often have change if needed.
Also, the Wi-Fi connectivity was strong and reliable throughout the resort, including in common areas, which made it easy to stay connected when needed.
We also booked a family photo session through the resort vendor, which was probably our first professional photo shoot as a family. It wasn’t inexpensive, but the experience was well organized, and the photos were delivered digitally within just two hours, which was impressively fast.
Food Experience, Vegetarian Perspective
We mostly ate at specialty restaurants for dinner, and reservations were required. These were much easier to secure with Infinity Club access. We tried the Mexican, taco, Italian, and beach cabana dinner options. All were decent, but vegetarian options were limited, so we often paired specialty dining with buffet meals to stay satisfied.
Café options were small but nice, with coffee, pastries, and ice cream available. One practical tip is not to leave food unattended at the buffet, as birds will happily target your plate. Overall, food was manageable for about three to five days for vegetarian travelers, but it would likely feel repetitive on a longer stay.
Another important note is that this hotel does not support online restaurant reservations. All dining reservations must be made in person with the concierge on the day of check‑in, so planning early is important.
Spa, Pools, and Amenities
The GEM Spa was calm, clean, and beautifully designed. Without discounts, it’s quite expensive, but Infinity Club benefits helped with 40 percent off spa services and free adult hydrotherapy access. The hydrotherapy circuit, an 11‑step process, was absolutely worth doing. One thing worth noting, though, is that there is no full salon on site. If you’re looking for hair services like styling, blowouts, or treatments, those options aren’t really available here.
The resort has three to four connected pools, one of which has been converted to adults‑only. Water was comfortable, slightly on the cooler side, and poolside food was surprisingly good. The kids club and arcade were okay but not standout. Our younger child spent a couple of hours there, but it wasn’t a highlight.
Final Thoughts
Although the Infinity Club package included ferry tickets to Isla Mujeres, the nearby ferry wasn’t operating daily, and our trip was too short to make it work. Reviews in the Cancun Facebook group were mixed as well. Honestly, the beach at our resort was incredible and hard to beat. With more time on a future trip, we’d consider adding Isla Mujeres, Chichen Itza, and Xcaret to the itinerary.
We felt safe throughout the trip, at the airport, inside the resort, in the hotel zone, and while using hotel‑arranged transportation. Would we go back? Yes, but for a different experience. Next time, we’d likely choose another area such as Playa Mujeres or Cozumel to balance resort time with excursions. That said, we’d absolutely consider returning to Cancun again with the right expectations.
