Here’s Why You Should Begin
India’s landscapes, cultures, and experiences are as vast as they are vibrant. But for many travelers, the sheer diversity can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? What do you prioritize? And how do you make sense of it all?
Born and raised in India, I’ve had the privilege of exploring many corners of the country, especially the vibrant North and soulful South. With Delhi as the capital and my roots in the South, I grew up immersed in the rich traditions of both regions.
After moving to the U.S., my visits back home often centered around family. But now, I’m making a conscious effort to rediscover India with my kids, taking them beyond grandparents’ homes to experience the country’s magic firsthand.
There’s so much of India I’ve yet to see, and honestly, it could take a lifetime and beyond.
This post is just the beginning. I’ll be sharing stories, tips, and curated itineraries to help you plan your own unforgettable journey through India and beyond.
✨ My Travel Roots
Growing up in a middle-class family, I was fortunate to have travel woven into my upbringing. My mom and uncle both had long-standing careers in the travel and hotel industry, which meant I got to experience India’s warm hospitality from a young age, staying in renowned hotels and visiting exciting destinations across the country.
One of my most cherished memories? My first international trip to Nepal as a teenager. That journey left an indelible mark on my heart and sparked a lifelong love for travel.
📅 When to Visit India
The best time to visit India varies by region, but September/October to April is generally ideal:
Peak season: November to February (book early to avoid high prices and limited availability)
Monsoon & heat: June to August is hot and humid—unless you’re heading to Ladakh or the Himalayas
Winter tip: Late December to mid-January can be foggy and cold in North India, with occasional travel delays
Post-Diwali caution: Air quality may be poor due to firecrackers, especially in North India
🌍 Why India Leaves a Lasting Impression
Travelers from around the world rave about India’s:
Food: Bold flavors, regional specialties, and spice levels that challenge and delight
Architecture: Ancient temples, Mughal forts, and colonial buildings
Hospitality: Warm, generous, and deeply rooted in tradition
Charm & Chaos: Vibrant traffic, bustling markets, and yes—cattle on the roads
India is an emotional, magical rollercoaster. It’s not just a destination—it’s an experience that stays with you long after you return home.
🛡️ Travel Smart
Especially in North India, it’s important to take precautions:
Daytime travel is generally safe, with plenty of people around.
Night travel requires more caution, stick to well-lit areas and trusted transport.
Pickpockets can be a concern in crowded places, just like in Europe.
To ensure a smooth trip, I always recommend booking through reliable travel agencies that offer personalized packages and local expertise. It makes all the difference. 🛍️ Shopping in India: A Cultural Treasure Hunt
India is a shopper’s paradise: bursting with variety, vibrancy, and value. Compared to the U.S., I always find a wider range of clothing options: ethnic wear, casuals, and accessories at every price point.
🏬 Malls vs. Markets
Malls: Air-conditioned, curated, and pricier : great deals during festivals
Markets: Colorful fabrics, handcrafted jewelry, embroidered kurtas, and quirky souvenirs. My favorite? Jaipur!
💡 Tip: Shop with a local guide to navigate bazaars and bargain confidently.
🧣 What to Shop For
Ethnic wear: Sarees, salwar suits, lehengas
Cotton kurtis, crop tops, linen shirts, flowy tops, and comfortable pants etc. (some of my most complimented outfits have one thing in common: they were all picked up in India!).
Accessories: Jhumkas, bangles, scarves
Home décor: Block prints, brassware, artisanal crafts etc.
💳 Payment & Tips in India
Cards: India is increasingly cashless, international Visa/Mastercard work well
UPI One World: Tourists can set up a prepaid wallet linked to their international number after a quick KYC, allowing QR code payments across India.
Forex Cards: Preloaded with INR, secure and widely accepted.
Cash: Handy for small vendors, local transport, and tipping.
Tipping: Not mandatory: Unlike in the US, high tipping percentages are not expected.
Check service charge: Some restaurants include it; otherwise may tip extra for exceptional service.
General guideline: 5-10% is common for local workers, such as taxi drivers, guides, and porters, who provide good service.
